Discover political science
Short description of the course: This introduction to the discipline will refer to concrete questions a political science student is asking to himself, and more generally, any citizen who tries to understand how the political and the civil spheres are organized. What is political action, politics, a policy? What is the meaning of power? What is legitimate power? What is a political system? What is democracy? Which are the principal collective actors of the political system (political parties, special interest groups)? Which are the values, materialists and "post materialists", of the citizens? What about political participation of the citizens? Which are the principal determinants of the vote? Is there a citizenship's crisis?

Full course description: Politics impact all of us. Everyday, political decisions impact many areas of our lives. In the 21st century, multiple paradoxes blur our vision of these decisions. - In which context are these decisions made? - What is power in a multi-level society? - Does the state remain the main political actor, if it is in competition with international and regional organizations? - Can democracy – pushed forward by the international community – coexist with authoritarian, or even totalitarian, regimes? - What is the role of ideologies in contemporary politics? The course aims at understanding and explaining political phenomena from a critical standpoint. The course material and exercises are in English but please note that the videos are in French with English subtitles.

This introductory course provides a strategic, industrial organisational and decision making framework for the major in supply chain management. By using in-depth knowledge from the fields of operations management, operations research and economics, valuable insight can be given for complex, integrated real-life problems.

The course will take a helicopter view for decision-making. The helicopter view is built upon: - Key questions to decide on: manufacturing organization, late differentiation, location, distribution networks, … - Objectives relevant to your business: cost, speed, flexibility, reliability, … We will work through questions such as: - Should you locate a process in a given country? This decision has an obvious impact on your HR costs, but it also affects your working capital and your ability to react to the market needs. - Should you centralize your distribution? This decision leads to economies of scale and a better product availability, but it also impacts your carbon emission. By the end of this course, you will have built a framework that allows you to make better decisions.
Prerequisites Notions of business (marketing, finance and operations) might be helpful but are not a required prerequisite.
